PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY

In the paper manufacturing process there is considerable use of natural fresh water sources, such as rivers and lakes, which likely means their will be debris and solids in the liquid stream. Amerispray makes a line of products designed to filter the varying level of contaminants that would be found in this process, as well as during the recycling of water.

General features and benefits of these installations:

  • Filtration helps to prevent the accumulation of debris and fibers in the piping systems, reducing the possibility of detachment of the material that has built up inside the pipe.
  • Significant water savings, with obvious benefits in terms of costs and environmental impact.
  • The filters are automatically cleaned when the differential pressure gauge detects a partial blockage of the cartridge, or after a set time, allowing fully automatic operation.
  • Filtration is mechanical, utilizing either scrapers or brushes.
  • Filters that are mounted after the pumps require very low positive pressure (approximately 5-6 m) .
  • The cleaning cycle lasts approximately 8 seconds, during this time the exhaust valve remains open 4-5 seconds, allowing the system to download just the contents of the cartridge.
  • Low pressure drop (2.9-4.4 psi) due to the design of the filter cartridge.

Filter Applications

Station pumping of fresh water and recycling of white water

Fresh water taken from the environment for use in production requires a high level of filtration. In times of drought, or river and lake drawdowns, there can be a considerable amount of sand in the intake stream. During periods of heavy rain or flooding there may be a variety of larger debris that can block canvas, felt, pipes, pumps, and nozzles. Automatic systems can have a filter factor that ranges from 50 to 1500 microns, depending on the type of contaminant and the application.

Static Filters for Paper Mill

A cost saving option is to use static filters, downstream of the liquid stream that has already been filtered by the automatic filtration system. Because the liquid stream has already been filtered and is free of larger solids and contaminants, the filter mediums will be less likely to clog, allowing the use of conventional static filters.

Static Filters (YMS)

Are ideal for low-pressure spray showers that use recycled water for cleaning felt.

ALSF Static Filter

These static filters (ALSF- in aluminum) and (ASF- in 316SS) are positioned just before the spray application, to provide another level of filtration down stream of the automatic filtration process.

Spray Nozzles and Shower Applications in Paper Mills

Self-cleaning brush showers

Can include both automatic and manual rotating mechanisms, to be used with the spray disc cleaning brush. Oscillating systems and controls are also available for the brush header systems.

Flat Table

The piping is basically laid out in the following positions (although this may vary depending on the manufacturer and the application):

  • Shower type: oscillating, solid stream, pressure 150-220 psi , and utilizing a “dandy cylinder”. A “dandy cylinder” is a mesh cylinder that compacts and smooths the surface, usually positioned above the canvas. This is where our C7 sprayer nozzles are typically used.
  • Shower type: oscillating, solid stream, pressure 500-1,000 psi, to clean the “suction cylinder”. This is at the end of the canvas, where it pulls the canvas and provides suction. Our C7C type nozzles, with a ceramic insert, are ideal for high pressure applications.
  • Shower type: fixed, fan, pressure 30-45 psi, used on the canvas head cylinder (at the beginning of the canvas).
  • Shower type: fixed, fan, pressure 15-30 psi, on the coupling cylinder above the canvas where the spray is used for moisturizing.
  • The C7 brush shower and spray discs, these showers are used to prevent the nozzles from clogging.

STARCH TREATMENT

MC2 and MC3 flat fan style nozzles are ideal for spraying starch on to the paper product.

DAMP PRESSES

This is a system that uses a roller to press the paper sheet between felt faces.  It’s function is to squeeze out water and compact the paper sheet.
Oscillating spray showers with solid streams, operating at pressures ranging from 150-350 psi, are used in this area to clean the felt. The showers are normally fitted before a suction tank, which is used to remove residual water. The suction tanks (at the entrance) and some rollers are lubricated by means of fixed low pressure (15-45 psi) spray showers, with lower flow rates. These are fitted with small diameter fan nozzles and are used to prevent the felt from heating up, due to friction with fixed edges or and rollers.

Paper Mill Nozzles

Solid Stream Nozzles

They are ideal for cleaning felts, wires, fabrics, and rolls, which require high impact cleaning. These nozzles are usually installed on an oscillating pipe and operate at pressures ranging from 200-600 psi. These nozzle types are also used for trimming the paper.

Flat Spray Nozzles for Paper Mills

CD3 nozzles are used to wash rolls and apply liquid to the paper.

The CD4 model is a high impact flat spray nozzle, which is typically used at pressures ranging from 40-200 psi.

The MC2 and MC3 flat spray nozzles are used at medium to low pressures. They are used in a wide variety of applications throughout the paper mill.

Full Cone Nozzles for Paper Mills

May be used for foam abatement in the inflow boxes.

Self Cleaning Nozzles

Self-cleaning flat spray and solid stream nozzles (CD6). Pressure fluctuation activates the purging mechanism, thereby removing potential clogging materials from the nozzle.

Atomizing Nozzles

Air atomizing nozzles are used for paper dampening and to lubricate paper edges at the end of the production run. These nozzles can also be used for humidification throughout the manufacturing facility.
